A thank you to "Soldiers" . . Contributed By p.f. On Sunday, March 17, 2002 My first memory of this war.I was about 6 years old and found my sister crying one day.Her friend was in the first wave of soldiers that went to that savage country. He was killed immediately.within a week. He was from W. Peabody, Mass, near St. Adelaide Church. I don't know his name, he is just one in the thousands who died in this war. I would like to thank these men for keeping the rest of us safe, for fighting for our country, for keeping us free. Whenever I heard the Star Spangled Banner sung I would get choked up, long before Sept 11; I'm worse now. The sight of our flag waving on a clear blue sky makes me want to cry, it always has. Even as a child growing up in the 60's I knew that our men dying in Viet Nam was very wrong, but I was still proud of these men. and as a young adult I cringed at the treatment of our soldiers when they came home. I have taught my children to be proud of their country, and that it is an honor to serve. I also have just seen the movie "we were soldiers", it was a gutwrenching movie, something very hard to face, but it's real, and it happened. It happened while the rest of the country sat, picketed, protested. I pray that these soldiers who managed to come home alive are taken care of, they so deserve it. I pray for the thousands who died doing their duty. I thank you for keeping us safe.
