Overdue Tribute to a Fallen Cousin
I remember the evening you called my house to ask for Aunt Margie and Uncle Fran (his father and my father were brothers). He was about to be deployed to Viet Nam. I was sixteen at the time and I was playing poker at the house with my buddies...my parents were working that evening. You told me to tell my folks that he loved them. I rather lamely wished him well and probably good luck. I told my buddies that it was my cousin that called and he was on his way to Nam. I also told my friends you called to tell my folks you loved them (To openly express love then as he did was unusual and it demonstrated what a heck of a guy he was). I think we all knew what he was risking: we continued the card game. That was the last time I talked to Harry. Fighting for our country was the farthest thing from our minds at that time.

Forty years have past and I still think of that evening call and the poker game. The contrast between frivolity and courage and duty to country is striking. Harry didn't have to serve in combat since he was the only surviving son, but he did. Harry lived up to his convictions and he died doing so.

Thank you Harry for your courage and selfless sacrifice. You will always be an inspiration to me. May the God you loved and served keep you close to Him.

Thank you for your ultimate sacrifice for the greater man. You are braver than I. You didn't die in vain. May god bless you and your family

A distant cousin
Harry, I remembered you when I was a boy of 15 just before you left for Vietnam. You didn,t treat me like a kid even though you were still one yourself. My mom kept your death notice all these years and I found it in her bible after she passed away in 1998. I remember your military funeral and how your sister kissed your coffin at the end of the service as I choked back my tears. You are truly a Hero to me. Say hi to my mom and yours. You know who I am. God Bless All you Brave Vets.

Hero
My father just called and asked me if I would be able to find your name on the wall for him. You both fought together and my father referred to you as a good friend which I can not remember him ever saying that about anyone before. I just want to say Thank you so very much for my freedom and you truly are a HERO! I just wish you could hear it.
