We Shall Never Forget~

I remember to this day when Tom came to say 'Goodbye' before he left for his second tour of Vietnam. He reupped in order to get an early out. I will never forget that Friday the 13th in June, 1969. You were taken way too soon-so full of life! I thank you for your sacrifice. You will never be forgotten!

My Father's Friend
Though I have never met you, you have always been with me. You died before I was born but you have always been a part of my life, a part of my heart. I have heard many stories about you and the times you had with my Dad. I am thankful for you, your service to our country and thankful that my Dad's life was blessed by yours. You gave all so that I may have and I will forever be thankful. You will always be in my heart, my thoughts and forever be a part of my life. RIP ALWAYS

OVERDUE LETTER
DEAR WILK FAMILY, THIS IS A LONG OVERDUE LETTER ABOUT TOM,40 ,YEARS GOES BY FAST. I LANDED IN VIETNAM IN APRIL OF 1969,I WAS PUT IN THE 10 TON SQUAD. TOM WAS ONE OF THE FIRST PEOPLE I MEET. WE BECAME FRIENDS FAST. HE TOOK ME UNDER HIS WING AND TAUGHT ME EVERYTHING I NEEDED TO KNOW ABOUT 10 TON TRUCKS AND HOW TO SURVIVE SO MANY MILES FROM MY HOME IN TENNESSEE. OUR JOB WAS HAULING EQUIPMENT TO JOB SIGHT AND BACK , ALSO HAULING WATER FOR THE COMPOUND FOR DRINKING AND BATHING,ETC. TIME SEEMED TO STAND STILL,DAY’S WERE LONG AND HOT EVEN IN MONSOON SEASON. WE LIVED IN THE SAME HOOCH ,TOM’S BUNK TO THE LEFT OF MINE. WE HAD A LOT OF LAUGHS TOGETHER IN THE SHORT TIME I KNEW TOM.LATER ON TOM WAS PUT ON A BULLDOZER IN ORDER TO GET HIS SP5 STRIPES, HE DIDN’T SEEM TO MIND THIS.HIS M.O.S. MAY HAVE BEEN DOZER OPERATOR HE NEVER SAID. EVEN THOUGH IT HAS BEEN 40 YEARS NOW ,IT SEEMS LIKE YESTERDAY THAT TOM WAS KILLED.NOT A DAY GOES BY I DON’T THINK ABOUT TOM. ON JUNE 13TH,1969 I HAD BEEN TO THE RIVER TO PICK UP A TANKER OF WATER FOR THE COMPOUND. ON THE WAY BACK ,I STOPPED TO TALK TO TOM ,HE WAS DRESSING THE SIDE OF THE ROAD ON HIS DOZER,HWY ,QL20. HE WAS ALONE ,REST OF THE CO. WAS ABOUT A HALF MILE AWAY WORKING. I DON’T KNOW WHY HE WAS ALONE. SHOULD HAVE HAD A SHOTGUN(GUARD) WITH HIM. WE LAUGHED AND TALKED FOR 10 OR 15 MIN.BEFORE I LEFT HIM TO GO BACK TO THE COMPOUND. I SHOULD HAVE STAYED WITH HIM THAT DAY,MAYBE I COULD HAVE MADE A DIFFERENCE. I WAS THE LAST PERSON TO SEE TOM ALIVE. I CALLED HIM WILKS HE CALLED ME KILLER KIELY MOST OF THE TIME ,DON’T KNOW WHY BUT WE ALWAYS HAD A GOOD LAUGH OVER IT.I KNOW HE LOVED HIS FAMILY BECAUSE HE SPOKE OF THEM OFTEN AND OF A GIRL HE WAS TO MARRY.GOD WAS WITH HIM. I’LL ALWAYS REMEMBER HIM ,GOOD MAN, GOOD FRIEND ! REGARDS, JOHN KIELY

~ Rest In Peace, Young Soldier ~

In Remembrance of SP4 Thomas John Wilk, with a Multitude of Thanks for his Courage, Service and Dedication to our Country and for Freedom. Rest well and know that you will NEVER BE FORGOTTEN. My brother, Sgt. David Dickinson is a young hero, who also made the Supreme Sacrifice in Vietnam in 1967......REST YOUR HEAD NOW, WEARY SOLDIER. CAST YOUR WEAPONS TO THE GROUND. CLOSE YOUR EYES AND FEEL THE PEACE, THE LIGHT OF JESUS FOLD AROUND. HEED NOT OUR EARTHLY BATTLE CRIES, THERE IS NO POST FOR YOU TO STAND, SO REST NOW AS HE CARRIES YOU, WITHIN HIS LOVING HAND. DO NOT LOOK BACK UPON US, DISREGARD OUR SELFISH TEARS, WALK IN THE SUNLIGHT OF THE SPIRIT, FREE OF WAR AND PAIN AND FEAR. YOUR DUTY HERE IS DONE NOW, AS OURS WILL SOMEDAY BE, SO GO YOU NOW TO PLACES, ONLY HEROES SEE. ~Author Unknown~
